I wrote the following post this morning on The Huffington Post. Another poster mentioned the term "you be" as slang used by uneducated blacks:
Using the term "you be" as slang has nothing to be "an uneducated black." The term "you be" is part of that derivation of the english language know as "black english." The legitimacy of black english is usually debated by folks who didn't grow up black and never had to attend an inner city school. I grew up in DC in the 60s and 70s and so-called black english was how folks communicated. Many "educated" blacks speak both black english and standard english. When they are in a business environment they speak one way, when they are around family and friends they may use some black english terms or phrases. "Educated" white folks use terms associated with black english and no one refers to them as "uneducated." A prime example is the use of the term "boo-yah" by Jim Kramer of Mad Money. I hear a lot of white folks like him use the term who have no idea of it's origin. The rapper "Ice Cube" used the term in some of his songs back in the early 90s. When asked what the term meant, he said the it was the sound a shot gun made when "you are blastin' some fool." (Shooting a rivel gang member.) So speaking slang doesn't necessarily mean that one is uneducated.
