Illinois Senator Roland Burris

The following is the text of an email I sent to my Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Milkulski and to my Congressman Chris Van Hollen concerning the appointment of Roland Burris to fill Obama's Senate seat on Janury 7, 2009:

Despite eight years of subverting the Constitution and not being held accountable, George Bush was allowed to appoint numerous corrupt, incompetent, and unethical individuals to various high level positions in government. At no time was any of these people barred or denied their position based on the potentially illegal actions of George Bush. Now here comes the Illinois governor (who has been indicted but not convicted of any crime) with the nerve to appoint a black man to replace Obama in the Senate. Lo’ and behold now the white democratic leadership in the Senate wants to stand up and up hold the Constitution and the integrity of the body by barring its lone black member. What has Mr. Burris done to deserve such treatment? The Illinois governor is within his authority and no one has accused Mr. Burris of anything. What I see is a bunch of cowards, who allowed a bunch of crooks to destroy our country, disrespect Black America as a whole in barring a qualified black man from taking his rightful seat as the U.S. Senator from the State of Illinois. I doubt if Mr. Burris had been Jewish that this action would have come to pass, but I guess black folk don’t contribute enough money to white democrats to merit the same level of respect. If you think that black Americans are going to allow this to stand you are sorely mistaken and every member of the Senate and Congress should be ashamed of themselves for not standing up for Mr. Burris.
